Science

Our Vision

At Oakwood, we aim to inspire a love of Science and a deep understanding of the world in all children. We want our pupils to be filled with awe and wonder, approaching the world with curiosity and passion. Through high-quality teaching and meaningful experiences, we nurture self-belief, ensuring every child feels confident in their ability to explore, question and succeed in Science.
We intend to achieve this by working scientifically and by actively promoting curiosity, investigation and independence. Children develop determination as they plan enquiries, test ideas, learn from mistakes and embrace the process of trial and improvement. With honesty, they record results accurately, evaluate evidence critically and draw reasoned conclusions based on what they observe. Through practical, enquiry-based lessons, pupils build secure knowledge of key scientific concepts and apply this understanding in meaningful contexts.
Collaboration is central to our approach. By working together to investigate, discuss findings and solve problems, children develop strong teamwork skills, learning to listen to one another, share ideas and respect different viewpoints. They show respect for each other’s contributions, for the equipment they use and for the world around them, developing an appreciation for the role Science plays in caring for our environment and communities.

Through this approach, all children can truly ‘Be Scientists’. Our curriculum ensures clear progression in scientific knowledge, understanding and vocabulary throughout their learning journey. As a result, pupils become scientifically minded individuals who confidently ask questions about how the world works and are equipped with the skills and values to explore it responsibly and thoughtfully.
