Phonics & Early Reading
Our Vision
At Oakwood Primary School we aim to provide effective Phonics and Early Reading provision from the beginning of Reception. We to do this to ensure that our children foster a love and enjoyment of reading which will ensure that they start Key Stage 2 with the ability to access the wider curriculum confidently.
To do this we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme

Within this programme children are taught Phonics every day for 30 minutes and any child who requires extra support can take part in a short daily keep-up session. All our staff are Little Wandle trained.

At Oakwood we carry out an additional Blending Blast to provide children with an opportunity to practise this skill with the new sounds they have learnt. This takes place daily.

Reading practice sessions take place three times a week and are taught in small groups by fully trained adults. The books are matched to their phonic level and enable them to build on confidence and fluency.
As part of the programme the children also bring home a ‘sharing book’ every week. This is a book an adult can read and share with their child for pleasure.
